The EDIAQI project, a proud member of the IDEAL Cluster, is excited to share that Advisory Board Member Gaetano Settimo has been appointed to the Expert Advisory Committee of the Global Open Air Quality Standards (GO AQS). While the push for standardisation within the IDEAL Cluster is being led by the Synair-G project—under the guidance of DIN (the German Institute for Standardisation)—EDIAQI’s active collaboration ensures that our collective efforts in indoor air quality (IAQ) research and innovation are represented with a unified voice.

Synair-G: Pioneering Standardisation in the IDEAL Cluster

Within the IDEAL Cluster, WG4—Guidelines (SynAir-G)—is dedicated to the critical task of standardisation. Led by DIN, a member of the Synair-G project consortium, WG4 is focused on:

  • Assessing Existing Standards: Evaluating published and emerging standards related to the Cluster’s activities to create a comprehensive, living repository for project partners.
  • Identifying Gaps: Comparing current standards with the needs identified through research to highlight areas where new standardisation activities could be beneficial.
  • Streamlining Efforts: Linking various standardisation activities across the Cluster’s projects to avoid duplication and uncover synergies, ensuring that innovations are quickly and effectively disseminated to benefit society.

The SynAir-G project is at the forefront of transforming research findings into market-ready standards, thereby ensuring that the innovations within the IDEAL Cluster reach society.

GO AQS: A Global Framework for Air Quality

GO AQS is committed to establishing transparent, science-based air quality guidelines that can be universally adopted. Their dual approach targets both outdoor and indoor environments through:

  • GO IAQS Starter: Focused on accessible thresholds for essential pollutants like PM2.5 and CO₂, particularly benefiting developing regions and under-resourced communities.
  • GO IAQS Ultimate: Designed to enhance building performance by addressing a wider range of pollutants, ensuring higher levels of occupant health protection.

This global initiative dovetails with the standardisation efforts of SynAir-G, reinforcing the importance of a cohesive, unified approach to IAQ standards.

Gaetano Settimo’s Role in Bridging Initiatives

Gaetano Settimo’s appointment to the GO AQS Expert Advisory Committee is a testament to his extensive expertise and his commitment to advancing indoor air quality. His role will:

  • Enhance Cross-Project Collaboration: Act as a conduit between the global standardisation efforts of GO AQS and the structured approach of SynAir-G within the IDEAL Cluster.
  • Support Unified Policy Development: Help align international guidelines with the evolving research outputs from the IDEAL Cluster, ensuring consistency across standards.
  • Promote Knowledge Exchange: Facilitate the sharing of best practices and innovative solutions, bridging regional efforts with global perspectives.

A Unified Path Forward

Although the SynAir-G project is at the helm of pushing forward standardisation within the IDEAL Cluster, EDIAQI’s collaboration and Gaetano Settimo’s active participation in GO AQS are instrumental in ensuring that our research is aligned with global best practices. This partnership underscores our commitment to a unified, coherent approach to indoor air quality that benefits all communities. Together, the efforts of SynAir-G, GO AQS, and the IDEAL Cluster are paving the way for a future where clean, healthy indoor environments are standardised and accessible worldwide.
